Born in Taiwan in 1923. Graduated from Kyoto Imperial University, Faculty of Agriculture. Entered Japanese Army in 1943. After the war, entered National Taiwan University. Studied at Iowa State University and Cornell University in the U.S. and became a professor at National Taiwan University. Joined the Kuomintang in 1971. Joined the cabinet as a Minister without Portfolio in Executive Yuan in 1972. Became mayor of Taipei, chairman of Taiwan Provincial Government, and vice president. Became president after President Chiang Ching-kuo died in 1988. Elected president in 1990, elected in the first direct presidential election in Taiwan in 1996, served as president for 12 years, and democratized Taiwan. Stepped down from the presidency at the end of his term in 2000.

Born in Miyakonojo city, Miyazaki prefecture in 1970. Grew up in Ina town, Kitaadachi County, Saitama prefecture. Graduated from Waseda University, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Philosophy. Established a film production company, Reiciel Studio, Inc. in 2003. Produced TV commercials for more than 100 companies, conducted education for film production, and produced movies. All of his works have the theme of love, and "Philosopher King" also has the themes of love and faith. His grandfather worked at Taiwan Government-general during the war. His mother was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and came to Japan after the war.
